Reimagining the Humanities and Social Sciences in the Anthropocene

Rodh Lynn Ruiz · 2026. 8. 4.

The humanities and social sciences have always played a vital role in helping us understand what it means to be human. Through disciplines such as history, philosophy, literature, sociology, anthropology, political science, and theology, they explore the ideas, cultures, relationships, and institutions that shape human life. They do more than describe societies; they help us reflect on questions of identity, morality, justice, responsibility, and the common good. In doing so, they provide the intellectual and moral resources needed to understand both ourselves and the world we share.

The challenges of the twenty-first century have given these disciplines a renewed sense of urgency. Climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, widening inequality, and increasing social instability have shown that many of today's greatest crises cannot be understood through science and technology alone. Scientific knowledge explains how these problems develop and offers practical solutions, but it cannot fully answer the deeper questions they raise about human values, moral responsibility, and the kind of future we are shaping. These questions lie at the heart of the humanities and social sciences.

Many scholars describe this new reality as the Anthropocene, an age in which human activity has become a defining force shaping the Earth's ecosystems and influencing the future of life itself. More than a geological term, the Anthropocene provides a framework for understanding the close relationship between human societies and planetary crises. It reminds us that environmental challenges are also cultural, ethical, political, and spiritual challenges because they arise from the ways people think, govern, consume, and relate to one another and to the rest of creation.

Understanding the present age as the Anthropocene therefore reshapes both the significance and the responsibilities of the humanities and social sciences. Their task is no longer limited to interpreting cultures, societies, and human behavior. They are also called to examine the values, beliefs, and social systems that contribute to planetary crises while helping individuals and communities cultivate wisdom, justice, and responsible stewardship. In an age profoundly shaped by human influence, these disciplines are indispensable for forming the moral vision and ethical responsibility needed to seek the flourishing of both humanity and the whole created order.

Scripture offers a deeper foundation for this renewed calling. Human beings were created in the image of God and entrusted with the care of His creation (Genesis 1:26–28; 2:15). This vocation reminds us that knowledge, influence, and authority are gifts to be exercised with wisdom, humility, and faithful stewardship rather than self-interest or exploitation. Seen through this biblical vision, the humanities and social sciences become more than academic disciplines. They become essential means of helping people pursue justice, care for creation, and participate faithfully in God's redemptive purpose for the world.

From Human-Centered Thinking to Faithful Stewardship

One of the most significant ways the Anthropocene reshapes the humanities and social sciences is by changing how they understand humanity's relationship with the created world. For much of modern history, these disciplines have focused primarily on human culture, politics, economics, and social development. While these concerns remain essential, the Anthropocene has made it increasingly clear that human societies cannot be understood apart from the natural environment upon which they depend. Environmental degradation, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity reveal that the well-being of humanity and the well-being of creation are deeply interconnected.

This changing reality expands the responsibilities of the humanities and social sciences. Their work is no longer limited to interpreting cultures or explaining social change. They are also called to examine the beliefs, values, and social systems that have contributed to today's planetary crises. By doing so, they help society wrestle with questions that science alone cannot answer: What responsibilities accompany human knowledge and power? What kind of relationship should humanity have with the natural world? What does genuine human flourishing look like in an age of ecological crisis?

The Christian Scriptures offer a compelling answer to these questions by presenting humanity as God's steward rather than the owner of creation. “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1, KJV). Because creation belongs to God, human authority must always be exercised under His sovereign rule. This calling is further expressed in Genesis 2:15, where God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to dress it and to keep it” (KJV). From the beginning, humanity was entrusted not with the exploitation of creation but with its faithful care.

Christopher J. H. Wright argues that stewardship is an essential dimension of humanity's vocation within God's creation. Caring for the earth is therefore not an optional environmental concern added to the Christian faith; it is rooted in the biblical story itself. When viewed through this lens, the humanities and social sciences help recover a moral framework in which human progress is measured not only by technological achievement or economic growth but also by wisdom, justice, and faithful stewardship.

Understanding the Anthropocene therefore reshapes these disciplines by calling them to recover humanity's original vocation as responsible stewards of God's creation. Their significance is found not only in helping us understand society but also in forming people and communities whose values encourage the flourishing of both humanity and the whole created order.

Cultivating Moral Vision in an Age of Planetary Crisis

If the Anthropocene reveals a crisis in humanity's relationship with the natural world, it also reveals a crisis of human values. Environmental degradation, social injustice, and the misuse of power are not merely the result of technological limitations or ineffective policies. They also reflect the beliefs, priorities, and moral choices that shape human societies. For this reason, the humanities have a renewed responsibility in the Anthropocene. Beyond preserving culture or interpreting history, they help cultivate the moral vision that enables individuals and communities to pursue what is good, just, and life-giving.

Disciplines such as literature, philosophy, history, and theology shape the way societies understand truth, human dignity, and the common good. They preserve collective memory, challenge destructive ideologies, and encourage ethical reflection. In the context of the Anthropocene, these disciplines help people recognize that planetary crises cannot be addressed by technological innovation alone. Lasting change also requires transformed values, renewed moral imagination, and a deeper commitment to the well-being of both humanity and creation.

The Scriptures reveal that the brokenness of creation is inseparable from the brokenness of humanity. Paul writes that “the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now” as it awaits God's redemption (Romans 8:22, KJV; see also Romans 8:19–21). This passage reminds us that the effects of sin extend beyond individual lives to the whole created order. Yet it also proclaims hope. God has not abandoned His creation but is accomplishing His redemptive purpose through Jesus Christ.

N. T. Wright observes that the Christian hope is not the abandonment of the world but its renewal. Because God intends to reconcile and restore His creation, Christians are called to live in ways that reflect that future even now. The humanities contribute to this calling by nurturing wisdom, compassion, hope, and moral responsibility. They help form people whose values inspire faithful stewardship, concern for justice, and love for both neighbor and creation.

Understanding the Anthropocene therefore reshapes the significance of the humanities by expanding their responsibility beyond the interpretation of culture. They are also called to cultivate the moral vision that enables societies to respond faithfully to planetary crises. By shaping the values that guide human action, the humanities contribute to God's ongoing work of renewal and encourage communities to seek the flourishing of all creation.

Pursuing Justice and the Common Good

The Anthropocene not only reshapes humanity's relationship with creation but also changes how we understand our responsibility toward one another. Environmental crises are never purely ecological. They influence public health, economic stability, education, migration, and the well-being of communities across generations. In many cases, those who contribute least to environmental degradation suffer its consequences most severely. Recognizing these realities gives the social sciences a renewed responsibility to interpret the social dimensions of planetary crises with wisdom, compassion, and a commitment to justice.

Disciplines such as sociology, economics, political science, and anthropology help explain how institutions, policies, cultures, and patterns of human behavior shape both society and the environment. They expose the structural causes of poverty, inequality, conflict, and environmental injustice while offering insights that contribute to more just communities and responsible public life. In the Anthropocene, the significance of the social sciences extends beyond social analysis. They also help societies seek solutions that promote human dignity, responsible stewardship, and the common good.

The biblical vision of justice provides an essential foundation for this responsibility. Throughout Scripture, justice is closely connected with love for God and love for neighbor. The prophets consistently call God's people to defend the vulnerable, practice righteousness, and reject oppression. Jesus likewise taught that love for God and love for neighbor stand at the heart of faithful obedience (Matthew 22:37–40, KJV). Caring for creation cannot be separated from caring for people because both belong to God and reflect His loving purpose.

This biblical vision ultimately points to the hope of God's coming Kingdom. Revelation 21:1–5 describes the promise of a new heaven and a new earth where God dwells with His people and makes all things new (KJV). This future hope does not encourage passivity or indifference toward present challenges. Instead, it calls believers to live as faithful witnesses of God's Kingdom by pursuing justice, serving their neighbors, and caring responsibly for the world God has entrusted to them.

Understanding the Anthropocene therefore broadens the significance of the social sciences. Their responsibility is not only to explain how societies function but also to help cultivate communities marked by justice, compassion, and responsible stewardship. Together with the humanities, they contribute to a richer understanding of human flourishing that reflects God's purposes for both humanity and the whole created order.

Conclusion

결론

Understanding the present age as the Anthropocene challenges us to rethink not only humanity's impact on the world but also the purpose of the humanities and social sciences. These disciplines are no longer called simply to interpret cultures, societies, or historical change. They also bear the responsibility of helping people understand the moral, cultural, and social roots of today's planetary crises while cultivating the wisdom and ethical responsibility needed to respond faithfully.

From a biblical perspective, this renewed responsibility is grounded in God's purpose for creation. Human beings were created to exercise faithful stewardship, pursue justice, and live in loving relationship with both God and neighbor. Although sin has distorted these relationships and brought brokenness into the created order, Scripture points beyond the present crisis to God's redemptive work through Jesus Christ.

The New Testament presents Christ not only as the Savior of humanity but also as the One through whom God is reconciling all things to Himself. As Paul writes, “For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself” (Colossians 1:19–20, KJV). This hope gives lasting meaning to the work of the humanities and social sciences. Their highest calling is not merely to describe the world as it is but to help cultivate wisdom, justice, compassion, and faithful stewardship that reflect God's redemptive purposes for His creation.

The Anthropocene reminds us that humanity possesses remarkable power to shape the future of the earth. The Christian gospel reminds us that true hope is found not in human achievement alone but in God's renewing work through Christ. As people seek to understand and respond to the challenges of this age, the humanities and social sciences remain indispensable—not only for interpreting contemporary societies and planetary crises, but also for nurturing communities that embody truth, justice, responsible stewardship, and hope in the coming Kingdom of God.
