[Ephesians 1:3-6]
Praise to God, Who Has Given Us Every Spiritual Blessing in Christ Before the Foundation of the World
3.Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
4.even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love,
5.He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,
6.to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1chapter 3verse-5The words of verses 3-5 say that
God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world,
so that we might be holy and blameless before Him in love,
predestining us according to the good pleasure of His will,,
and that we praise God who has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places—
the blessing of becoming children of God through Jesus Christ..
And 6In verse 6,
the purpose of giving us all these spiritual blessings in the heavenly places is
so that we may praise the glory of the grace
freely given to us in Jesus Christ, whom God loves..
To understand this content more easily, let us first 4verse-5centering on the words of verses 4-5,
3examine what every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places mentioned in verse 3 is..
Next, 6we will explain the process by which we come to praise the glory of God's grace as described in verse 6..
1]He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world [1:4]
Our history is not confined merely to the span of time between the day we are born on this earth and the day we die..
Ephesians 1chapter 4Verse 4 tells us that our existence and mission were already predestined in Christ within God's economy before the foundation of the world..
Therefore, our lives are not personal life-spans that began by chance,,
but a holy calling, placed according to God's will within the history of humanity and the history of all creation..
The era in which we are born on earth and the time when we will conclude our lives belong to God's sovereignty..
Yet what kind of life we must live during that span is made clear to us through Scripture..
That life is the life of God's children, holy and blameless before Him..
And such a life is
a life that fulfills, in Christ, the great identity of humanity—called from the foundation of the world to be established as God's vice-regents according to His image and likeness(Gen 1:26-28)—
a life that progressively accomplishes this calling in Christ..
From the beginning, humanity was not a being who fully realized the image of God in a completed sense,,
but a being meant to bring that image and likeness to fullness through obedience to God's will..
However, through the Fall, humanity departed from that calling,,
and now the saints who have been called as children of God in Jesus Christ
mature, conformed to the image of Christ, into beings holy and blameless before God(Gen 3:1-24; Rom 8:29; Col 3:10; Eph 4:13).
This fulfillment
begins with a life lived on earth as God's vice-regent together with Jesus Christ according to His will,,
expands into the eschatological hope of Scripture—that we shall reign with Christ—,
and is consummated in the life of eternally serving and reigning with God and the Lamb in the new heavens and the new earth, where God's righteousness dwells
(Rev 5:9-10; Rev 20:4-6; 2 Pet 3:13; Rev 22:1-5).
Here, to reign with Jesus Christ as vice-regents of God's kingdom
does not mean to lord it over people as worldly powers do..
Jesus Christ came not to be served but to serve,,
and to give His life as a ransom for many(Mark 10:35-45).
Furthermore, Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,,
and the One who redeemed us with the precious blood of a lamb without blemish or defect(John 1:29; 1 Pet 1:18-19).
Therefore, the life of reigning with Christ is not a life of wielding power like the kings of this world,,
but a life of participating in the reign of God's kingdom through service, obedience, and holy responsibility, conformed to Jesus Christ who became the atoning sacrifice..
Scripture tells us that those who believe in Jesus Christ become sons of God through faith,,
are clothed with Christ,,and belong to Christ(Gal 3:26-29).
Moreover, Jesus said to His disciples, "The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves,",
and to the disciples who had stood by Him in His trials, He entrusted a kingdom
and promised that they would eat and drink at His table and sit on thrones to rule(Luke 22:24-30).
And the book of Revelation says that the one who overcomes will be given authority to rule over the nations,,
will become a pillar in the temple of God,,
and just as Christ sat down with His Father on His throne,
so too will be granted to sit with Christ on His throne(Rev 2:26-29; Rev 3:12-13; Rev 3:21-22).
