The Church:
Its Identity and Mission
in Light of Biblical Witness and Historical Contexts

Rodh Lynn Ruiz · 2026. 7. 29.

Introduction

서론

The Church stands at the center of God's redemptive purpose revealed throughout Scripture. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells the story of a God who calls a people to Himself, forms them according to His will, and sends them into the world as witnesses of His grace and Kingdom. What began with God's covenant relationship with Israel reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who established the new covenant through His death and resurrection. Through the Holy Spirit, God continues to gather and empower His people until the day when Christ will bring His redemptive work to completion.

For this reason, the Church is far more than a religious institution, a building, or a weekly gathering. The New Testament presents the Church as the people of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. These three biblical images reveal the Church's identity and provide the foundation for understanding its mission in the world. Although the Church has existed within different cultures, societies, and historical circumstances, its calling remains rooted in the unchanging purpose of God revealed in Scripture.

Understanding the Church's identity is essential because mission flows from who the Church is. The Church does not create its own purpose; it receives its identity and mission from God. As God's people, united to Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Church is called to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, serve others, and bear witness to God's coming Kingdom.

I. The People of God: A Covenant Identity

The identity of the Church as the people of God is rooted in God's covenant relationship with Israel. After delivering His people from slavery in Egypt, God declared:

“Ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.”
(Exodus 19:6, KJV)

Israel was chosen by God's grace to belong to Him and to reflect His character before the nations. Their calling was not simply to receive God's blessings but to become a people through whom God's purposes would be revealed to the world. The covenant relationship established at Sinai showed that God's people were called to live in obedience, holiness, and faithfulness as a testimony of His presence among them.

This covenant purpose finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Writing to believers, the Apostle Peter applies the language of God's covenant people to the Church:

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”
(1 Peter 2:9, KJV)

Through Christ, God gathers people from every nation into one redeemed community. The Church does not belong to one ethnic group, culture, or nation; it is a people created by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul explains that Christ has broken down the dividing walls between Jews and Gentiles, creating “one new man” in Himself (Ephesians 2:15, KJV).

As Christopher J. H. Wright explains, God's calling of a people has always been connected to His mission. God blesses His people so that they may become a blessing to others. Therefore, the Church's identity as the people of God carries both privilege and responsibility. It is called to worship God, pursue holiness, love one another, and faithfully proclaim His saving work to the world.

In every generation, the Church must remember that its identity is not determined by cultural influence, political power, or social recognition. It belongs first and foremost to God. Because it is His people, the Church is called to faithfully represent His character and purposes wherever He has placed it.

II. The Body of Christ: United Under One Head

II.

The New Testament also describes the Church as the body of Christ, emphasizing its living relationship with Jesus Christ and the unity of all believers. Paul writes:

“And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.”
(Ephesians 1:22–23, KJV)

This image reveals that Christ is not only the founder of the Church but also its living Head. The Church receives its identity, direction, and purpose from Him. It does not exist to follow human ambitions or cultural expectations but to faithfully represent Christ and continue His work in the world.

Paul further explains this image through the example of the human body. Although a body has many different parts, each part has a unique function and contributes to the health of the whole. In the same way, the Church is composed of believers with different gifts, backgrounds, and responsibilities, yet all are united in Christ. Paul declares:

“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
(1 Corinthians 12:27, KJV)

The diversity within the Church is therefore not a reason for division but an expression of God's wisdom. Every believer has a role in serving the Church and participating in God's work. As Edmund P. Clowney explains, the Church makes Christ visible in the world as it lives under His authority and reflects His character.

Being the body of Christ also means that the Church must continue the ministry of Christ through its words and actions. Jesus came to serve, to seek the lost, and to reconcile humanity to God. Therefore, His body is called to demonstrate His love, humility, compassion, and truth. Through faithful proclamation of the gospel, mutual care among believers, and loving service to others, the Church becomes a visible witness of Christ's presence in the world.

Ultimately, the Church's unity and mission are found in Christ Himself. Paul reminds believers that Christ is the one through whom God is reconciling all things to Himself:

“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself.”
(Colossians 1:20, KJV)

The work of Christ is therefore not limited to individual salvation alone but points toward God's larger purpose of restoring what has been broken through sin. As the body of Christ, the Church participates in this redemptive purpose by faithfully representing its Lord until His Kingdom is fully revealed.

III. The Temple of the Holy Spirit: God's Presence Among His People

III.

The third biblical image describes the Church as the temple of the Holy Spirit, emphasizing that God Himself dwells among His people. In the Old Testament, God's presence was associated with the tabernacle and the temple, where He met with Israel. Through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, God's presence is now experienced within the community of believers.

Paul writes:

“In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”
(Ephesians 2:22, KJV)

The Church is therefore not defined by a physical structure but by the presence of God among His people. Wherever believers gather in Christ's name and live according to His will, they become a dwelling place where God's presence is revealed.

The Holy Spirit not only dwells within the Church but also empowers it for its mission. Before His ascension, Jesus promised His disciples:

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me.”
(Acts 1:8, KJV)

This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost when the Spirit empowered the early Church to proclaim the gospel among different nations and languages (Acts 2). The mission of the Church is therefore not accomplished through human strength alone but through the guidance and power of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit also enables the Church to live as a holy community that reflects God's character. Paul reminds believers:

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
(1 Corinthians 3:16, KJV)

Because God's Spirit dwells within His people, the Church is called to pursue holiness, unity, love, and faithfulness. Its life together should demonstrate the transforming power of God's presence.

The Spirit also gives the Church hope in the midst of a broken world. Paul writes that:

“The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
(Romans 8:22, KJV)

Creation itself awaits the completion of God's redemptive work. While the Church looks forward to the fulfillment of God's promises, it is also called to live as a witness of that coming renewal through faithful service, compassion, reconciliation, and responsible care for God's creation.

IV. The Church Through Diverse Historical Contexts

IV.

Throughout history, the Church has carried out its calling within many different cultural, social, and political environments. The early Christians proclaimed Jesus as Lord in the context of the Roman Empire, where they often experienced opposition and persecution. Despite these challenges, they remained committed to the teaching of the apostles, fellowship, worship, and the proclamation of the gospel (Acts 2:42–47).

As centuries passed, the Church encountered new opportunities and challenges. Christians established communities of faith, cared for the poor, developed educational institutions, and participated in the transformation of societies. The Protestant Reformation renewed emphasis on the authority of Scripture and the centrality of salvation by grace through faith, while the global missionary movement carried the gospel across cultures and nations.

These historical developments demonstrate that while the Church's circumstances may change, its identity remains constant. The methods and expressions of ministry may differ according to time and place, but the foundation of the Church remains Jesus Christ and His Word. As Lesslie Newbigin emphasized, the Church is called to faithfully proclaim the unchanging gospel within changing cultures without allowing the culture to determine the truth of the gospel.

Today, the Church continues to serve in a rapidly changing world shaped by globalization, technology, social challenges, and ecological concerns. These realities require wisdom and faithfulness. The Church must engage its context without losing its biblical identity. Its mission is not to withdraw from the world or simply conform to it, but to become a faithful witness of Christ's Kingdom within every generation.

V. The Church's Mission in the World

The identity of the Church determines its mission. Because the Church is God's people, Christ's body, and the temple of the Holy Spirit, it is called to participate in God's redemptive work in the world. The mission of the Church does not begin with human plans but with God's own purpose. Jesus gave this calling to His disciples:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
(Matthew 28:19, KJV)

The Great Commission remains central to the Church's mission in every generation. The Church is called to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, teach obedience to Christ, and invite people into the saving relationship God offers through Him.

However, the mission of the Church is not limited to words alone. The gospel transforms the whole life of believers and shapes how they relate to God, others, and the world. Jesus taught that His followers would be recognized by their love:

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
(John 13:35, KJV)

Therefore, the Church's witness includes acts of mercy, compassion, justice, reconciliation, and faithful service. Caring for the poor, seeking peace, defending human dignity, and responsibly stewarding God's creation are expressions of a life transformed by the gospel. These actions do not replace the proclamation of Christ but demonstrate the reality of His Kingdom.

The mission of the Church is ultimately connected to God's promise of restoration. Scripture reveals that God's purpose is moving toward the renewal of all things through Christ. John describes the final hope of God's people:

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.”
(Revelation 21:1, KJV)

Until that day, the Church is called to live as a sign of God's coming Kingdom. It proclaims the hope of Christ, serves the world in love, and faithfully participates in God's work of redemption while waiting for the complete fulfillment of His promises.

Conclusion

결론

The biblical witness reveals that the Church's identity and mission are inseparably connected. The Church is the people of God, called into covenant relationship with Him. It is the body of Christ, united under the authority of its Head and called to reflect His character. It is the temple of the Holy Spirit, empowered by God's presence to live and witness in the world.

Although the Church has existed in different historical and cultural contexts, its foundation remains unchanged. Its mission comes not from human ambition but from God's eternal purpose revealed in Scripture. The Church is called to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, make disciples, love its neighbors, serve faithfully, and bear witness to the hope of God's coming Kingdom.

In a world marked by brokenness, uncertainty, and longing for renewal, the Church has a unique calling. It is not merely waiting for the future fulfillment of God's promises; it is called to live as a faithful witness of that future reality today. Through the power of Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit, the Church continues to participate in God's redemptive mission until the day when He makes all things new.
