What is Christian Theology?

Vim Joy Delos Trinos · 2026. 6. 27.

Christian theology is the systematic study of God and His Word, the Holy Bible. It seeks to understand God's nature, character, works, and His plan of salvation for humanity through Jesus Christ. The word theology comes from the Greek words theos (God) and logos (study or word), which together mean "the study of God."

Christian theology is founded on the Bible, which Christians believe to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. It examines the essential doctrines of the Christian faith, including the doctrine of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, humanity, sin, salvation, the Church, and the last things. Through these teachings, believers gain a deeper understanding of God's truth and His purpose for their lives.

The study of Christian theology is important because it strengthens faith, deepens knowledge of Scripture, and equips believers to live according to God's will. It also prepares Christians to teach biblical truth, defend their faith with wisdom and humility, and faithfully serve God in their daily lives and ministry.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of God's Word in 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NIV): "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." This passage reminds believers that Scripture is the foundation of Christian theology and spiritual growth.

In conclusion, Christian theology is the study of God based on His revealed Word, the Bible. Its purpose is not only to increase knowledge but also to deepen one's relationship with God, strengthen faith in Jesus Christ, and equip believers to live faithfully and serve Him effectively.
