Human Greed, the Abuse of Power, Unjust Social Structures, and the Christian Mission: A Critical Response

Vim Joy Delos Trinos · 2026. 7. 26.

Introduction

서론

Throughout history, human communities and the created order have suffered because of greed, the concentration and abuse of power, and unjust social structures. These realities have led to poverty, oppression, environmental destruction, war, inequality, and the exploitation of vulnerable people. From a Christian perspective, these problems are not merely social or political issues; they are manifestations of sin that distort God's intention for creation. Scripture teaches that God created humanity to live in justice, peace, stewardship, and loving relationships with one another and with creation (Genesis 1–2). However, human rebellion against God introduced brokenness into every aspect of life (Genesis 3), resulting in systems and structures that perpetuate injustice. Therefore, Christian mission cannot be limited to evangelism alone but must include a prophetic and transformative engagement with society. It seeks to proclaim the gospel while confronting injustice, restoring human dignity, and participating in God's mission of reconciliation and renewal.

1. Human Greed and the Degradation of Human Communities

Greed has been a driving force behind many historical injustices. Throughout history, the pursuit of wealth and material gain has fueled slavery, colonialism, corruption, economic exploitation, and environmental destruction. Powerful nations often exploited weaker societies for natural resources, labor, and political control, leaving generations trapped in poverty and dependency.

The Bible consistently condemns greed because it places material possessions above God and neighbor (Luke 12:15). The prophets denounced those who accumulated wealth by oppressing the poor (Amos 5:11–12). Greed destroys communities by creating economic inequality, social exclusion, and broken relationships. It also contributes to ecological degradation through the irresponsible exploitation of God's creation.

Christian mission responds by promoting generosity, justice, stewardship, and economic practices that reflect God's concern for the poor. The church is called to model communities where resources are shared, human dignity is respected, and creation is cared for responsibly (Acts 2:44–47).

2. The Concentration and Abuse of Power

History demonstrates that concentrated political, economic, and religious power often leads to oppression and violence. Dictatorships, racial segregation, authoritarian governments, and exploitative institutions have marginalized vulnerable populations while protecting the interests of elites.

Biblically, power is intended to serve rather than dominate. Jesus rejected worldly models of authority, teaching that true greatness is found in humble service (Mark 10:42–45). His own ministry challenged oppressive religious and political structures while defending the marginalized.

Christian mission therefore includes a prophetic responsibility to confront abuses of power. The church must advocate for accountability, defend human rights, protect the oppressed, and encourage leadership characterized by humility, justice, and servant-heartedness. Silence in the face of oppression contradicts the mission of Christ.

3. Unjust Social Structures and Systemic Sin

Many societies develop institutional systems that normalize injustice. Racism, caste discrimination, sexism, unequal access to education, unfair labor systems, and discriminatory legal structures become embedded within cultures and institutions.

These structures often outlive individual acts of injustice because they become accepted as normal. The biblical prophets repeatedly confronted systems that oppressed widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor (Isaiah 1:17). Jesus likewise challenged social barriers by welcoming those excluded by society.

Christian mission recognizes that sin is both personal and structural. Evangelism must therefore be accompanied by efforts to reform unjust institutions, promote reconciliation, and empower marginalized communities. Mission involves both proclaiming salvation in Christ and participating in God's work of social transformation.

4. The Degradation of the Created Order

Human greed and irresponsible power have not only harmed people but also damaged creation. Deforestation, pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, and the overconsumption of natural resources reflect humanity's failure to fulfill God's command to steward the earth responsibly (Genesis 2:15).

Creation itself suffers because of human sin (Romans 8:19–22). Christian mission therefore includes creation care as an essential expression of discipleship. Caring for the environment is not separate from the gospel but demonstrates obedience to God's mandate to preserve and cultivate creation for future generations.

Churches can respond by promoting sustainable living, environmental education, responsible consumption, and advocacy for policies that protect ecosystems and vulnerable communities most affected by environmental degradation.

5. Christian Mission as God's Transformative Response

The Christian understanding of Missio Dei emphasizes that mission originates with God, who is actively restoring all creation through Jesus Christ. The mission of the church is to participate in this divine work by proclaiming the gospel and embodying God's kingdom through justice, compassion, reconciliation, and peace.

This holistic mission includes:

Proclaiming salvation through Jesus Christ.

Defending the dignity of every human being.

Challenging systems of injustice.

Promoting economic fairness and compassion for the poor.

Advocating peace and reconciliation.

Caring for God's creation through faithful stewardship.

Demonstrating God's love through practical service.

The gospel transforms both individuals and societies. Genuine Christian mission seeks spiritual renewal while also addressing the social, political, economic, and ecological consequences of sin.

Conclusion

결론

Human greed, the abuse and concentration of power, and unjust social structures have repeatedly devastated human communities and the created order throughout history. These forces have produced poverty, oppression, violence, environmental destruction, and deep social divisions that continue to affect millions today. Scripture reveals that such realities stem from humanity's alienation from God and represent a rejection of God's purposes for justice, love, and stewardship.

Christian mission must therefore move beyond a narrow understanding of evangelism to embrace God's holistic mission of restoring all creation. Faithful mission proclaims the saving work of Jesus Christ while courageously confronting injustice, defending the oppressed, promoting reconciliation, and caring for the environment. The church is called to be both a prophetic voice against systems of oppression and a living demonstration of God's kingdom through compassionate action. As followers of Christ participate in the Missio Dei, they become agents of transformation who bear witness to God's justice, peace, and love, anticipating the ultimate renewal of all creation in the reign of God. In this way, Christian mission offers hope not only for individual salvation but also for the healing of communities and the restoration of the whole created order.
