Living the Future Today: How Eschatological Hope Shapes Christian Life and Mission in the Anthropocene Era

Introduction

서론

Christian hope is often misunderstood as merely predicting future events—when Christ will return, who the Antichrist will be, or how the world will end. While these questions have their place, biblical eschatology is not meant to satisfy human curiosity about the future. Instead, it gives believers a hope that transforms how they live in the present. Centered on the resurrection, the final judgment, and the promise of a new heaven and a new earth, Christian hope calls believers to live faithfully, serve others, and participate in God's mission while waiting for Christ's return. In today's Anthropocene era, this hope is especially relevant as Christians seek to respond faithfully to the moral, social, and environmental challenges of their time.

I. The Foundation of Christian Hope

Christian hope rests on God's promises rather than human optimism. At its center is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which guarantees the future resurrection of all who belong to Him (1 Corinthians 15:20–22; John 11:25; Romans 8:11). Because Christ has conquered sin and death, believers no longer live in fear but in confident expectation of eternal life.

This hope is also grounded in the certainty of the final judgment. Scripture teaches that God will judge the world with perfect righteousness (Matthew 25:31–46; Romans 14:10–12; Revelation 20:11–15). The final judgment is not merely about punishment; it is the assurance that justice will ultimately prevail, evil will be defeated, and God will make all things right.

Finally, Christian hope looks forward to the promise of a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1–5; Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:13). This is not the abandonment of creation but its complete renewal. God will dwell with His people, sin and death will be no more, and His original purpose for creation will be fully restored. The future God has promised gives meaning and direction to how Christians live today.

II. Living in Light of That Hope

II.

Because Christian believers belong to God's future Kingdom, they begin living according to its values today. Eschatological hope shapes Christian ethics by calling believers to lives of holiness, integrity, love, forgiveness, and faithful obedience (1 Peter 1:13–16; 2 Peter 3:11–14). Christian morality is not driven simply by rules but by the desire to reflect the character of the coming King.

This hope also shapes public responsibility. Since God will one day establish perfect justice, Christians are called to pursue justice, love their neighbors, care for the poor, seek peace, and contribute to the common good (Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:13–16; Jeremiah 29:7). These responsibilities do not arise from the belief that humanity can create a perfect world by its own efforts. Rather, they are expressions of faithful stewardship as citizens of God's coming Kingdom.

Eschatological hope likewise gives purpose to the Church's mission. The mission of God's people is not simply to prepare individuals for heaven but to bear witness to the reign of Christ through evangelism, discipleship, compassionate service, reconciliation, and lives that display the transforming power of the gospel (Matthew 28:18–20; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:17–20). As the Church proclaims Christ and serves others, it offers a foretaste of the Kingdom that will one day be fully revealed.

III. Hope in the Anthropocene Era

III.

Christians live between Christ's resurrection and His promised return. The Kingdom of God has already come through Christ, yet its fullness is still to come. This biblical tension keeps believers from two extremes: passive waiting for the future and the belief that human effort alone can establish God's Kingdom on earth.

In the Anthropocene era, where human activity has profoundly affected both society and the natural world, this hope calls the Church to faithful engagement rather than withdrawal. The promise of a new heaven and a new earth does not diminish the value of the present creation; instead, it inspires believers to care for God's world as faithful stewards while proclaiming the gospel of His Kingdom. Caring for creation, pursuing justice, serving our neighbors, and making disciples are not competing priorities but complementary expressions of the Church's witness as it anticipates God's final restoration of all things.

Conclusion

결론

Biblical eschatology is not a message of escape but of faithful hope. The resurrection gives believers confidence, the final judgment inspires righteousness and responsibility, and the promise of a new heaven and a new earth provides the vision for Christian life and mission. As Christians await the fulfillment of God's promises, they are called to live the future today—reflecting the values of God's Kingdom through holy living, responsible public engagement, faithful stewardship, and wholehearted participation in God's mission until Christ makes all things new.
